Welcome Back Patriots - Upcoming Events!

posted Aug 15, 2017, 9:20 AM by CAPT Deehr

Hello to All New and Returning Members of Patriot Company,

A hearty welcome back to the parents of our returning Cadets and a welcome aboard to the parents of our new incoming students.  It’s going to be an exciting year for everyone, so let’s get started.  As many of you know, the Naval Science Instructor position was vacant last year but prior to the end of the school year we hired a highly motivated retired Chief Petty Officer named Mathew Spears.  Chief Spears comes to us following 23 years of active duty service as an Intelligence Specialist.  He spent several years as an instructor and is a qualified Master Training Specialist, so he brings with him a wealth of knowledge as an educator and trainer.  He very much looks forward to training and mentoring our future leaders and with him on board, I look forward to a very active and exciting year.

For those of you new to the NJROTC program, please let me introduce myself.  My name is Captain John Deehr, USN (Retired) and I truly love my job as the Senior Naval Science Instructor!  I love it because I get to work with, educate, train, and mentor the Cadets of Patriot Company and help them achieve their academic and personal goals.  To give you a little bit of information about myself; I retired in March 2016 after 30 years of active duty service.  I had the absolute honor and privilege to serve with and lead the Sailors and Marines of our Navy and Marine Corps at many levels including as the Commanding Officer of USS Germantown (LSD 42), USS Peleliu (LHA 5), and most recently as the Professor of Naval Science and Commanding Officer of the NROTC Unit at the University of Washington.  Last year was my first year in the NJROTC program and I learned a lot about Liberty High School, the Unit, and myself, and I look forward to putting those lessons learned into action in the 2017-18 school year.

As we approach the new school year there a number of activities/events of which you should be aware.  First, we have a series of activities that will take place before school officially begins on Wednesday, 06 September.  The first of these activities is our Air Rifle Marksmanship Camp.  This two day camp is primarily designed for new and returning Cadets who are interested in learning how to shoot an air rifle and the art of marksmanship.  Our Varsity Air Rifle Team will shoot competitively at various matches throughout the year and we’re always looking for potential talent!  The first day of the camp is devoted to all the safety aspects of air rifle competition, while the second day is devoted to shooting and actual hands on experience with the air rifle.  Our air rifle range is set up in the school’s lower auxiliary gym so all activities are held completely on campus.  If your son or daughter has any desire to learn how to shoot properly and compete at a very high level, please encourage them to participate.  Or maybe they just want to check it out and see if it’s something they might be interested in, and that’s ok as well. EVERYONE IS WELCOME TO PARTICIPATE!  The dates are August 24-25 from 0900 to 1500.  (9am to 3pm).  On the first day everyone will meet in the NJROTC classroom spaces (Portable 5 & 6).  We also ask that each student bring $6.00/day for lunch.  We will provide Subway or pizza and beverages.

Although uniform issue is an important aspect of our orientation, it is only a small part.  Our returning Cadets are in charge of this event and it provides our Cadet staff a chance to practice what they have been taught (leadership) as well as a chance for the new students to get to know their fellow Cadets in a more casual setting than the classroom.  Also, the Cadet staff will discuss NJROTC program requirements, including uniform requirements and grooming standards, available NJROTC teams and participation, and Unit expectations and goals for the 2017-18 school year.  In addition to classroom training, some basic skills will be taught and team building and sporting events will take place.  In the end, your son or daughter will learn that they have joined an organization of young people who will instantly be their friends and will “have their back.”  Ultimately, the goal NJROTC Orientation is for the new students to be more comfortable in their new academic home and organization.  We call it being a “shipmate.”  While NJROTC Orientation is not mandatory, we certainly encourage all new NJROTC students to come and join in the fun.

First day of school is Wednesday, September 6th and Curriculum Night is Thursday the 7th.  It’s a very busy time for all of us and Curriculum Night only gives us about 10 minutes to discuss the program.  So after the dust settles a bit, we like to meet all the parents in a less stressful environment.  We do this by hosting a Parent/Guardian Pot Luck Dinner right here at Portable 5 & 6.  The Parent/Guardian Pot Luck Dinner is set for Wednesday, September 13th starting at 1830 (6:30pm).  During this time Chief and I will explain what the program provides, how the program is set up, our expectations for our Cadets, and how you, as parents/guardians can help your Cadet excel and achieve their goals within the program.  We will also explain what we don’t do.  This program is like no other you have encountered in the public school system and we encourage all parents to attend this very informative meeting.   We know just how special this program is and would like to share that information with all of you.  Additionally, many of our returning parents attend this meeting and share their experience and knowledge with our new parents.  So please put this night on your calendar!  We look forward to seeing you.  And remember, as this is a POT LUCK DINNER, please bring a family favorite dish to share.

Please forgive me for the length of this post but I wanted to ensure everyone is aware of our near term events!  Again welcome.  Chief Spears and I are very much looking forward to the upcoming school year and hope to see you all very soon.
